Classy Henman through in Miami
Tim Henman
Henman was in imperious form against Mantilla

Tim Henman stormed to an impressive 7-5 6-4 win over Spain's Felix Mantilla in the third round of the Nasdaq-100 Open Masters.

The British number one took the first set as Mantilla struggled to keep up with his opponent's pace and court coverage.

Henman was then briefly let down by his concentration and Mantilla took a 4-2 lead in the second set.

Losing is something I don't ever like. There's no comfort in it
Pete Sampras

But the 27-year-old, seeded number five here, used some intelligent tactics - chipping and charging on Mantilla's serve - to take the next four games and complete a straight-sets win.

He struggled out on court, though, in the early exchanges and called out the trainer twice in the opening set for treatment on a stiff neck.

The biggest surprise of the day saw Pete Sampras concede defeat to Chilean qualifier Fernando Gonzalez 7-6 6-1.

The American had looked on course for a comfortable victory as he raced away to a 4-1 lead.

But Gonzalez hit back, breaking to take the set to a tiebreak which he won 7-1. From there, Sampras buckled and rarely looked likely of posing a threat.

Marat Safin managed to beat both his temper and another qualifier, Peru's Luis Horna, 6-3 3-6 7-6 in a fiery contest.

Afterwards the Russian, who broke his racket and picked up a penalty point for a further outburst, said it "wasn't my day".

Elsewhere, Andrei Pavel of Romania stunned number four seed Tommy Haas 7-6, 6-7, 7-6 while American James Blake beat Guillermo Canas 6-4 6-3 and Roger Federer ousted Albert Portas 6-4 6-1.

Federer now meets Henman in the next round.
