Tim Henman beat qualifier Lars Burgsmuller 6-1 1-6 6-3 to progress to the third round of the Nasdaq-100 Open in Florida.

Henman began strongly to take the first set comfortably before the German rallied to take the second set by the same margin.

Henman broke Burgsmuller twice in the final set to set up a third round meeting with Spain's Felix Mantilla.

But the British number one would not be happy with his form, after making 43 unforced errors and eight double faults.

World number one Lleyton Hewitt struggled past Thailand's Paradorn Srichaphan 7-6 7-5 to extend his winning run on American soil to 19 matches.

Hewitt twice battled back from a break down to send the first set to a tie-break which the Australian claimed 7-3.

Hewitt took the decisive break in the second set at 6-5 and held on to take the match.

I feel like I can play better

In other second round play, 12th seed Roger Federer of Switzerland opened his account with 6-1 7-6 win over American qualifier Jeff Morrison.

Wimbledon champion Goran Ivanisevic, meanwhile, retired hurt in his game against Franco Squillari.

The Croat hinted afterwards that he may retire - but only after defending his All England crown this summer.

Pete Sampras survived a scare before rallying to beat Finland's Jarkko Nieminen 4-6 6-3 6-2.

The American, who is looking to end almost two years without a title, was on court almost until midnight.

"It's good to come through when you're not playing that well," he said. "But I managed to pull it out and I'll get better.

"The first match out I fell a little unsettled out there. I feel like I can play better."

In the third round Sampras will play Chilean qualifier Fernando Gonzalez, who advanced with 6-4 6-2 win over 21st seeded Spaniard Carlos Moya.
