Tenth seed Andy Roddick became the first major casualty of the Nasdaq-100 Open Masters when he crashed out 6-3 2-6 6-4 to Argentina's Juan Ignacio Chela on Friday Roddick failed to match his performance last year at this tournament when he beat former world number ones Pete Sampras and Marcelo Rios before losing to Lleyton Hewitt in the quarter-finals. Chela, who reached the final in Sydney and two other semi-finals this season, will now meet Frenchman Nicolas Escude, who beat Brazilian Fernando Meligeni 6-4 6-4.
Rain curtailed the day's play meaning some matches were held over until Saturday, including Juan Carlos Ferrero's meeting with Todd Martin. Third-seeded Russian Yevgeny Kafelnikov swept past Spain's Tommy Robredo 6-4 6-0. Kafelnikov, who has reached the quarter-finals in four of the six events he has played this season, started slowly against the 36th-ranked Spanish claycourter. But he needed just 23 minutes to clinch the second set. In seven tournaments this year Robredo has yet to get past the second round. Kafelnikov will next meet American wildcard Mardy Fish or Chile's Marcelo Rios. |
