Tim Henman won through to the second round of the Pacific Life Open in California by beating Spain's Tommy Robredo. The British number one had to contend with a heavy cold before overcoming Robredo 6-2 6-7 6-4 in the opening Masters Series event of 2002 at Indian Wells. Henman, currently fourth in the Champions Race, will now meet Nicolas Escude who beat Sjeng Schalken. Escude recently beat Henman in the final of the ABN/AMRO event in Rotterdam. Henman appeared to have the Spaniard under control before the effects of his cold gradually wore him down under the Californian sun. Even so Henman dug deep into his reserves to clinch the final set with a battling performance. Wilted The British player started well by breaking Robredo in his second service game, finishing off with an aggressive forehand pass to take a 3-1 lead before a sparse crowd. Robredo, who went out in the first round at last week's Dubai Open, lost his serve in the final game of the opening set as Henman closed out for a 6-2 win. The next set went to serve before Robredo, who was gradually finding his feet as Henman wilted, broke to go 5-4 up. Henman kept the set alive as Robredo crumbled with the chance to level the match at his fingertips. But Robredo took the set on a tie-break, winning 9-7, to send the match into a decider. That went with serve until Henman broke for a 5-4 lead and then kept his cool in the next game to win his first match point.
In other matches, Lleyton Hewitt beat former world number one Carlos Moya in straight sets, while 15th seed Guillermo Canas was beaten by fellow Argentine Gaston Gaudio. Pete Sampras, Marat Safin and Yevgeny Kafelnikov all came through their matches unscathed. Andy Roddick, meanwhile, has pulled out of the event with flu. Roddick has returned home to Boca Raton but faces a gruelling flight across country to be checked by Indian Wells' tournament doctors or he will be fined. ATP rules state that players will be fined $10,000 for late withdrawals, doubled if the player is seeded.
