Second seed Martina Hingis pulled out of the doubles at the Indian Wells Masters on Thursday suffering from tendonitis in her right wrist.

The withdrawal leaves her participation in the $2.1 million tournament in doubt.

According to the WTA, Hingis, the winner of two titles this season and a finalist at the Australian Open, sustained the injury while practising.

Hingis, who received a first round bye, is scheduled to meet Croatian qualifier Silvija Talaja in the second round either Friday or Saturday.

Stars withdraw

If Hingis does pull out it will be another a major blow to tournament organisers.

They have already seen world number one Venus Williams, her sister and defending champion Serena and Australian Open winner Jennifer Capriati, bypass the event.

The tournament lost another popular attraction on Thursday when Russian Anna Kournikova, Hingis's doubles partner, crashed out in the opening round.

Monica Seles, the 1992 champion at Indian Wells, began her bid for another title with a 6-0 6-2 victory over 14-year-old Russian Maria Sharapova.

The fourth-seeded Seles, 28, raced through the first set in 23 minutes of the second-round match in the Pacific Life Open.

She struggled slightly in the opening game, going to deuce on her serve four times before holding with a forehand winner, then lost only seven points the remainder of the first set.
