Andy Roddick is safely through to the second round of the International Championships in Florida after beating Nikolay Davydenko. The American top seed notched a 6-4 6-1 win over the Russian in the first round at Delray Beach. Afterwards Roddick, who lives locally, said: "It's more of a relief to get through it because first-round matches are always the toughest. "Playing at home, I feel I want to do well because my friends don't get to see me play often, once, maybe twice a year." Roddick, who won his fourth career title two weeks ago in Memphis, will face South Korea's Hyung-Taik Lee on Thursday. Lee beat Spain's David Sanchez 6-2, 6-3 to progress to round two. America's Jan-Michael Gambill, seeded second, was forced to fight back from a set down to beat Australia's Wayne Arthurs 6-7 (5/7) 6-3 7-6 (8/6). Fourth-seeded Nicolas Massu of Chile and Davide Sanguinetti of Italy, seeded five, also advanced to the second round. Massu beat Jeff Morrison 6-4 6-4, while Sanguinetti recovered from a first-set whitewash to edge Belgium's Christophe Rochus 0-6 6-4 6-1. |
