Lleyton Hewitt bounced back from his Australian Open misery with victory over France's Michael Llodra in the second round of the Siebel Open.

The world number one was ousted in the first round in the first Grand Slam of the year after failing to recover from a bout of chicken pox.

But playing in the $400,000 tournament in San Jose, his first match since that defeat, he eventually outhit his opponent to win 6-2 3-6 6-2.

Hewitt had been in powerful form from the outset but was stunned when Llodra launched a barrage of serves, volleys and one-handed backhands to round off the second set.

The Australian stamped his authority on the match once again to set up a match with Thailand's Paradorn Srichaphan in the next round.

Hewitt said of Llodra: "He serves extremely well and is very flashy from the baseline, so I knew it would be a tough match to get through.

Andy Roddick used sheer power to overcome Robby Ginepri

"But I felt physically and mentally the whole time and felt I was the better player the whole match."

Andy Roddick, who triumphed in last week's Kroger St Jude tournament in Memphis, continued his good form with a 6-4 6-4 victory over Robby Ginepri.

The powerful 19-year-old proved too strong for Ginepri, clocking up a 142mph serve during the match, the fastest of his career.

Roddick said: "I got off to a little bit of a slow start but then I bore down to take control.

"The difference tonight was that, on the big points, I felt more experienced than he did."

Hewitt and Roddick were joined in the next round by Jan-Michael Gambill and Xavier Malisse.

Gambill beat Denmark's Kenneth Carlsen of Denmark 7-6 6-2 despite a troublesome right ankle.

Malisse, the sixth seed in the Siebel Open, was a 6-4 6-2 winner over Nikolay Davydenko.
