Sampras recruits Spanish coach
Tom Gullikson
Gullikson began coaching Sampras in December
Pete Sampras has replaced coach Tom Gullikson with Spaniard Jose Higueras.

Sampras hired Gullikson on a temporary basis in December after parting company with Paul Annacone, and said their arrangement had been due to end in March.

"The trial period is over and we still remain very close friends.

He's a terrific coach, great person, honest, works hard
Paul Annacone on Jose Higueras
"Also, I will be working with Jose Higueras and he will still be working with Paul (Annacone) and the USTA," Sampras told the Los Angeles Times.

Higueras twice reached the semi-finals of the French Open in the early 1980s.

He guided Michael Chang to the French Open title in 1989 and has also coached Todd Martin and Jim Courier.

As well as looking after Sampras he will keep his job as men's coach for the USTA's touring pro program, which is run by Annacone.

"He's a terrific coach, great person, honest, works hard," said Annacone.

Gullikson is the twin brother of Sampras' former coach Tim Gullikson, who died of cancer in 1996.

The former US Davis Cup captain was with Sampras at the Australian Open last month, where he lost to Marat Safin in the fourth round.
