Andy Roddick staged a remarkable comeback from a set and 0-4 down against Andre Sa to reach the quarter-finals of the Kroger St Jude tournament in Memphis.

The second seed stared defeat in the face before rallying to beat his Brazilian opponent
5-7 6-4 6-3.

At 0-4 down in the second, Roddick won six games in succession to square the match and then kicked on to book a quarter-final against Sargis Sargsian.

He said: "I never gave up.

"A year ago I might have thrown my toys around, but I knew I had to make him work for it."

Sargsian earned his meeting with Roddick by upsetting sixth seed Jonas Bjorkman 1-6 6-3

The Armenian, watched by his 99-year-old grandfather, survived a match point in the decisive tie-break.

He said: "I have no idea how I won that match.

"Jonas had break points and missed what was an easy volley for him. I was lucky in the end."

Set points

Top seed Tommy Haas reached the last eight with a straight sets victory over American qualifier Justin Gimelstob.

But the world number four had to survive three set points in the first before coming through to win 7-6(7) 6-2.

The German now faces James Blake, a 6-2 4-6 6-3 winner over fellow American Taylor Dent.
