Henman eases into Swiss final
Henman looked in control throughout the semi-final
Tim Henman (GB) bt Carlos Moya 6-1 6-4
Britain's Tim Henman defeated Spaniard Carlos Moya to set up a final against home favourite Roger Federer in the Swiss indoor tournament. The second seed cruised through with an emphatic straight-sets victory over Moya in 72 minutes. Henman won the title in 1998, and goes into Sunday's showdown in fine form. He lost the opening service game in the semi-final against Moya, but hit back with a string of impressive shots to take the next six games and the first set 6-1. And as his opponent committed unforced errors, Henman broke in the fifth game of the second set, which he went on to secure 6-4.
Earlier, fourth seed Federer beat Julien Boutter 7-6 6-4 in 90 minutes. Federer, who was a ball boy at the tournament as a youngster, picked up vital points with 10 aces and several clever volleys. Boutter was troubled by a nagging pain in his right shoulder and asked for a brief medical time-out early in the second set. "I was bothered by my shoulder, but not seriously handicapped," the 27-year-old Frenchman said. Boutter, ranked 64th in the world, caused a shock at the start of the week by beating world number one Gustavo Kuerten in the first round. Federer admitted he would rather have faced Moya on Sunday than Henman. The Brit is chasing the sole remaining spot for the lucrative end-of-season Masters Cup. And he is looking forward to meeting Federer, who he defeated in this year's Wimbledon quarter-finals. "I'm sure he'll have a lot of support," Henman said. "It should be a good match." "It was my advantage at Wimbledon and the crowd really helped me out."
