Amanda Coetzer will play Kveta Hrdlickova for a place in the last four of the Seat Open on Friday.

The third seed from South Africa beat Patty Schneider, of Switzerland, 6-4 3-6 6-1 in Luxembourg to reach the quarter-finals.

The fourth seed, Germany's Anke Huber, also won beating Nathalie Dechy of France 6-1 6-3.

Hrdlickova, from the Czech Republic, beat the Bulgarian Lubomira Bacheva 7-6 6-3.

Rubin came from behind to beat Tauziat in Linz

In a first-round match, Rita Grande of Italy swept past Belorussian Tatiana Poutchek 6-1 6-2 to earn a match against top seed Kim Clijsters.

The Belgian, ranked fifth in the world, had a first-round bye.

With last year's winner and world number one Jennifer Capriati missing, Clijsters is firm favourite to recapture the title she won in 1999.

Meanwhile, in Austria, Jelena Dokic beat Iva Majoli after a close-fought three-set struggle. The Yugoslav third seed beat the Croatian 7-6 6-7 6-3.

In the same tournament, Chanda Rubin upset Nathalie Tauziat, the fourth seed, in the second round of the Generali Ladies Linz WTA indoor tournament.

The American overcame the Frenchwoman 3-6 7-5 6-3.

Fifth seed Elena Dementieva went through safely, beating Barbara Schwartz in straight sets 6-1 6-0.
