Lindsay Davenport
Davenport ended 2001 as the number one in the world
Date of birth: 08/06/1978
Nationality: American Grand slams: US Open 1998; Wimbledon 1999; Australian Open 2000 The 1996 Olympic champion has gone on to win three Grand Slam titles, including Wimbledon in 1999. She reached the final again the following year, where she lost to Venus Williams, and her progress since then has been dogged by a persistent knee injury. Despite that, she ended the 2001 season as the world's top-ranked player, pipping Jennifer Capriati at the last. But she underwent surgery on her troublesome knee in November 2001 and was out of action for nine months. At 6ft 2in, she is one of the most imposing players in the women's game, with a huge serve and a capacity to hit winners from the back of the court. Davenport first became the world number one in October 1998, having won the US Open on her mother's birthday two months before. She was only the fourth American-born player to claim the title in the open era, and the first since Chris Evert in 1982. Davenport began playing tennis at the age of seven. Her father, Wink, took part in the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City.
