Davenport outguns Capriati
Jennifer Capriati
Capriati found Davenport too tough in Zurich
Swisscom Challenge

L Davenport (US) bt J Capriati (US) 6-1 5-7 6-2

Lindsay Davenport beat fellow American Jennifer Capriati to reach the final of the Swisscom Challenge in Zurich.

Davenport improved her record to 7-2 over Capriati, who overtook Martina Hingis at the top of the world rankings on Monday.

The American now meets fourth seed Jelena Dokic after she beat Nathalie Tauziat, 6-2 6-2.

"I was a bit surprised," said Davenport who reached her fourth final in five tournaments.

I didn't feel nervous at all but maybe I wasn't playing as confident today
Jennifer Capriati
"I didn't feel I was playing so good but that she was so bad.

"But it's tough being number one with everyone expecting you to go out there and win.

"It's a great ride to get there but then suddenly something mentally changes where you get there and you're playing as number one."

Capriati was disappointed with her own performance.

"I couldn't get a grip at first," said Capriati.

"I didn't feel nervous at all but maybe I wasn't playing as confident today."

Davenport cruised through the first set, reaching 5-1 before breaking Capriati again.

The second set saw several exchanges of serve before Capriati levelled the match, winning 7-5.

But Davenport's recent good form came to the fore once again, taking the first three games of the final set before going on to comfortably win the contest.
