Goran battles through
Goran Ivanisevic
Ivanisevic struggled to break Philippoussis' serve
Wimbledon champion Goran Ivanisevic won the battle of the big servers against Australia's Mark Philippoussis to reach the third round of the Stuttgart Masters Series.

Ivanisevic fired 16 aces and Philippoussis 20 as the Croat came through a tight encounter 7-6 3-6 6-3.

He joins Tim Henman in the third round after the Briton had a straightforward 6-3 6-0 win over Axel Pretzsch.

Mark Philippoussis
Philippoussis was serving as big as ever
It took until the eighth game of the final set for Ivanisevic to break Philippoussis' serve, and from there he served out the match.

The 13th seed had earlier taken the opening set on a tie-break before losing his serve with a loose backhand midway through the second set.

Philippoussis looked on course for victory when he held four break points in the opening game of the third set, but Ivanisevic held on before forcing a break of his own.

South African Wayne Ferreira swept past 11th seed Roger Federer 7-6 (7/1) 3-6 6-2 to make it into the third round.

Federer, who went out in the first round at Moscow and Vienna, is the first seeded casualty of the tournament.

Defending champion Ferreira took the first set tie-breaker 7-1 before the Swiss right-hander battled back in the second set.

He took the decisive break in the second game, but Ferreira broke the 20-year-old in the deciding set to seal his progress to the third round.

Federer's defeat means he is now in serious danger of failing to secure a berth at November's Masters Cup in Sydney.

Hicham Arazi on his way to victory over Rainer Schuettler
Arazi barely broke sweat against Rainer Schuettler
Moroccan Hicham Arazi booked a second-round encounter with Andre Agassi after brushing past Rainer Schuettler 6-4 6-2.

It was the third time in row Arazi has accounted for the German, who gained wild card entry to the tournament after winning in Shanghai three weeks ago and then reaching the final in Hong Kong.

Sweden's Thomas Enqvist, winner at Stuttgart in 1999, advanced to the next stage with a 7-5 6-3 defeat of France's Nicolas Escude.

Argentine Guillermo Canas beat Spaniard Francisco Clavet 6-3 6-2, and Jiri Novak of the Czech Republic ousted Chile's Nicolas Massu 6-3 6-2.
