Double trouble for Capriati
Doubles matches are not a high priority for Capriati
Doubles matches are not a high priority for Capriati
Jennifer Capriati marked her first day as world number one with a defeat, but the American was far from unhappy after losing in the doubles at the Swisscom challenge in Zurich.

"The doubles don't count. I've lost many doubles matches," laughed Capriati after she and Megan Shaughnessy lost 7-5 7-6 (7/4) to Lindsay Davenport and Lisa Raymond in the first round.

"But I can still finally breathe a sigh of relief, it's official today.

"I can't describe the happiness and satisfaction I feel - it's something now no one can take away.

"It's been a long road but it's something a lot of people thought I could never do, something I wasn't sure of myself."

In the singles, American Chanda Rubin defeated Spain's Angeles Montolio 6-1 6-3, while Barbara Schett of Austria beat Spaniard Magui Serna 6-1 6-2.

Nadia Petrova of Russia spoiled the evening for the home fans, demolishing Swiss favourite Patty Schnyder 6-2 6-0.
