Haas gives family a treat
Tommy Haas celebrates after the CA Trophy final
Haas was thrilled to win in his father's home city
German number one Tommy Haas took the prize he badly wanted by winning the CA Trophy on Sunday in front of his Austrian relatives.

Haas' father was born in Vienna and many members of his family remain in the city - so the German enjoyed considerable support from the crowd.

His unseeded opponent Guillermo Canas - the first Argentine to reach an indoor final since Guillermo Vilas 18 years ago - enjoyed little support and had the weaker all-court game.

Sixth-seed Haas' 6-2 7-6 6-4 triumph atoned for last year's disappointment in Vienna when his father's family showed up only to see him lose the final.

It was the fourth ATP title of the German's career and his third this year - a streak which has placed him within 50 points of the cut for next month's eight-man year-end finals in Sydney.

"It's really nice to win here - I played great all week," said Haas, even though he had to save two match points against Thomas Enqvist in the semi-final.

Haas added: "As well as my coach I would like to thank all my family and the crowd here.

"The great support they have given me has helped me a lot."

Just as in the semi-final, Haas had to come back from a heart-stopping moment or two.

In the fifth game of the first set, Canas had two break points on his serve, but when he recovered them it proved to be something of a turning point.

In the next game the Argentine wasted a game point and dropped serve, and when he served to save the set at 2-5 two more errors gifted Haas the initiative.

The German seized that advantage in the second set and advanced to 4-1 with with some fierce flat ground strokes.

But then a tense Haas started to make hard work for himself, with three double faults at 4-2 which allowed Canas to break back.

The Argentine capitalised on more Haas errors to force a tie-break, and even here the German had to save his opponent's set point at 5-6.

Topsy-turvy

Haas went on to squeeze out the set and from there it was a matter of holding his nerve.

A topsy-turvy third set contained five breaks of serve but Haas came through.

Haas added: "I am not out of it in the Champions Race, but I will have to play well.

"I will go to Stuttgart next week and to Paris two weeks after that and do my best and just see what happens."
