Haas sets up Canas showdown
Tommy Haas
Tommy Haas is aiming to go one better than last year
Germany's Tommy Haas reached the final of the indoor CA Trophy for the second year running - but only just.

The sixth seed survived a cliffhanger duel 6-7 6-2 7-6 against Sweden's Thomas Enqvist to go through in Vienna.

Haas, who lost to Britain's Tim Henman in last year's final, fended off two match points before beating Enqvist to set up a clash with unseeded Argentine Guillermo Canas.

Canas, who beat Henman in this year's event, enjoyed a comfortable 6-2 7-5 win against Austrian wildcard Stefan Koubek in the other semi-final.

Haas and Canas have never met on the ATP Tour and Sunday's final in the $800,000 hardcourt event promises to be a tight match, with Haas 16th in the ATP Champions Race and Canas 17th.

Guillermo Canas

The 23-year-old German is chasing his third title of the year after winning in Adelaide and Long Island, and is also bidding to qualify for the season-ending Masters Cup in Sydney.

Canas clinched his maiden ATP title in Casablanca and also made the final in Stuttgart.

Haas said: "I'm going to give it my all. Canas is a real fighter, an all-round player who moves very well and is definitely one who's heading higher."

The German failed to find his rhythm in the first set and was stunned by Enqvist's consistency and lack of unforced errors.

The set went with serve to a tie-break, which the Swedish former world number four won 7-4.

But Haas bounced back, securing the second set with breaks in the fifth and seventh games.

Stefan Koubek

In the final set, Enqvist failed to convert match points in the ninth game and Haas fought hard to stay in the match.

The contest was eventually decided in another tie-break, which Haas won 7-4 on his second match point.

In the other semi-final, Canas raced through the first set with breaks in the first and fifth games, as Koubek failed to capitalise on several chances to break his opponent's serve.

Rallied by his home crowd, Koubek battled back in the second set but the 23-year-old Argentine wrapped up victory on his first match point after 90 minutes.

"I was very confident and maybe just played the important points better," Canas said.
