Roger Federer
Roger Federer celebrates beating Sampras at Wimbledon
Federer ended Pete Sampras' reign at Wimbledon
Date of birth: 08/08/1981
Nationality: Swiss
Grand Slams: None

Roger Federer is no longer considered one of tennis' rising stars, after making the break through in 2002.

Although still only 21, Federer is firmly established in the top 10 alongside other youngsters Lleyton Hewitt, Marat Safin and Juan Carlos Ferrero.

Federer showed his potential when he won the Wimbledon junior title in 1998, demonstrating his excellent all-court game.

And it was at Wimbledon in 2001 that Federer recorded one of his most famous wins, when he ended Pete Sampras' run of success in sensational style.

Federer's ability from both net and baseline have seen him compared with Sampras, and that is praise of the highest order.

2002 was something of a rollercoaster year for Federer, who started in fine style by winning in Sydney and reaching the final in Milan.

Another final in the Masters Series at Indian Wells, before destroying Gustavo Kuerten and Marat Safin on his way to the Masters title in Rome finished off an excellent start to the year.

But he could barely win a game in the summer and suffered first round defeats at Roland Garros and Wimbledon.

But a strong finish to the year, including a tournament win in Vienna, ensured his place in the end-of-season Masters Cup.
