Austrian wild card Stefan Koubek caused a major upset by knocking out fourth seed Roger Federer in the quarter-finals of the CA Trophy in Vienna. The result leaves Tommy Haas as the only seed to make it into the last four. Playing in front of his home crowd, Koubek, the world number 75 secured a 7-6 7-5 victory over Federer, ranked 65 places higher. Koubek, who beat Michael Chang in the previous round, saved seven break points in the second set. "To play Federer was not so difficult as playing Chang," said the Austrian. "The rallies were much shorter in this match and it was not so tiring. It is my best win of the year and I think I can get to the final." Koubek will meet Argentina's in-form Guillermo Canas in the last four. Canas followed up earlier his victory over defending champion Tim Henman with a 6-4 3-6 6-2 win over Swiss Michel Kratochvil. In the other half of the draw, sixth seed Tommy Haas, of Germany, made short work of Bohdan Ulihrach, sweeping the Czech aside 6-1 6-4 in just 56 minutes. Hass will face Thomas Enqvist next, after the Swede beat compartriot Andreas Vinciguerra 6-1 6-4.
