Monica Seles overcame a dip in form to beat France's Stephanie Foretz 6-1 5-7 6-2 in the last eight of the Shanghai Open.

The number one seed is looking for her second tournament victory in a week after taking the Japan Open title last Sunday.

But she will have to improve when she takes on Australian Alicia Molik in the semi-finals after allowing Foretz back into the match in the second set.

Molik made it to the last four with a 7-5 7-5 win over South Korea's Cho Yoon Jeong.

The other semi-final will see Italy's Rita Grande meet Nicole Pratt of Australia.

Seventh seed Grande was given a walkover when number four seed Ai Sugiyama of Japan retired with a back injury.

Pratt held her nerve after a poor second set to beat Taiwan's Janet Lee 6-2 2-6 6-4.

Results from Friday's action at the Shanghai Open:

Quarter-finals:

Monica Seles [1] (USA) bt Stephanie Foretz (Fra) 6-1 5-7 6-2
