Martina Hingis can keep hold of the number one spot

Martina Hingis has crushed Russia's Tatiana Panova 6-1 6-2 to reach the semi-finals of the Porsche Grand Prix.

Hingis now needs to beat Lindsay Davenport in the semi-finals to retain her world number one ranking.

Jennifer Capriati's hopes of taking over the top spot were dealt a blow by defeat to Sandrine Testud.

Capriati, the world number two, was hoping to close in on Hingis in the rankings with a good performance in Filderstadt.

But the American went out in the last eight as Testud fought back to claim a surprise 2-6 6-3 6-3 victory.

"I wasn't thinking about number one," said Capriati. "There are more tournaments to come. If I play good tennis, it will happen and if it happens, then great.

"Well, maybe I was thinking about it a little, maybe it was in the back of my mind."

Capriati could still take top spot in the rankings next week if Hingis fails to get into the final.

After a good start to the match, Capriati lost the rhythm on her serve and a forehand error after one hour and 55 minutes gave the match to her French opponent.

"I made a few mistakes in the first set but then I started playing really well and made the important points," said Testud.

Lindsay Davenport
Davenport cruised past Mauresmo
"Jennifer didn't serve too well and that helped me a bit but I was really aggressive and that was the key."

The unseeded 29-year-old won the title in 1998 and will take on Justine Henin of Belgium in the semi-finals.

Henin ended the run of local favourite Anke Huber, playing in her last season on the tour, with a 6-7 6-2 7-5 win.

Davenport made it into the last four with a comfortable 6-4 6-2 win over Amelie Mauresmo of France.
