Costa battles through
Spain's Albert Costa
Costa will face Federer or Massu in the second round
Spain's Albert Costa battled through to the second round of the CA Trophy in Vienna with victory over Austrian wild card Markus Hipfl.

The 26-year-old Spaniard struggled back from 3-4 down in the final set to win the match 6-3 3-6 6-4.

Costa will meet the winner of the match between fourth seed Roger Federer of Switzerland and Nicolas Massu from Chile.

Earlier, Thomas Enqvist made it through to the second round with a three set victory over Spain's Carlos Moya.

Enqvist, from Sweden, won the match 2-6 6-3 7-6.

Moya's defeat makes him the third seed to be knocked out of the tournament.

His third-seeded fellow Spaniard Alex Corretja and the seventh-seeded Frenchman Fabrice Santoro have already gone.

However, Moya, the eighth seed and former world number one, did not look in serious danger of defeat until the final stages.

Moya was well on top in the first set and was leading the final set 4-2.

But Enqvist, who is still recovering from shoulder and ankle operations in December, grew in confidence as the match wore on, eventually taking the final set tie-break 2-7.

Enqvist's reward is a second round tie against another Spaniard - Alberto Martin, the conqueror of Mark Philippoussis.

Elsewhere, Spain's Tommy Robredo beat Chilean Marcelo Rios 7-6 (7-4) 1-6 6-2.

Robredo will meet the winner of the match between top seed Yevgeny Kafelnikov of Russia and Bohdan Ulihrach of the Czech Republic.
