Local favourite Anke Huber survived a fright in her opening match at the Porsche Grand Prix before beating Russian Elena Likhovtseva.

She eventually came through 6-3 2-6 6-2 to reach the second round of the tournament she has won twice.

Huber, champion in 1991 and 1994, struggled for nearly two hours and served up 15 double faults.

The 26-year-old is retiring after next year's Australian Open and might be playing her last event in Germany unless she manages to qualify for the season-ending WTA Tour Championship in Munich.

She will now meets Kim Clijsters, the Belgian fourth seed, and admits she need to raise her game.

"I'll certainly not be the favourite against Kim Clijsters because she has been playing extremely well this year but I'll try my best and we'll see what happens."

Earlier, Meghann Shaughnessy suffered a straight sets defeat to Magui Serna to become the first seed to be knocked out.

A spate of unforced errors and poor groundstrokes proved costly and the American lost 6-3 6-4 to her Spanish opponent.

"I've beaten her before and that gives you confidence," said Serna. "I played one of my best matches of the year."

There were no problems for sixth seed Justine Henin of Belgium, who beat Russia's Elena Bovina 6-2 7-5.

The 1995 champion Iva Majoli, a wild-card entry at the tournament, lost to Dutch qualifier Miriam Oremans.

Oremans lost the first set but fought back to win 5-7 6-2 6-3.

Austria's Barbara Schett lost to Chanda Rubin 6-2 7-5 while Slovakia's Daniela Hantuchova beat Patty Schnyder 3-6 6-1 7-5.

The tournament's top seeds - Martina Hingis, Jennifer Capriati, Lindsey Davenport and Clijsters - all received first-round byes.
