Dokic pulls out of Shanghai Open

Jelena Dokic has withdrawn from the Shanghai Open with a strained left ankle. The Yugoslav sustained the injury in the final of the Kremlin Cup on Sunday, in which she defeated Elena Dementieva. Meanwhile, seventh seed Rita Grande was the highest seeded player in action on Monday, defeating Alexandra Fusai. In a statement from Moscow, Dokic said: "I'm disappointed I can't come back to Shanghai because I had a great time there last year. "But after straining my ankle early in the Moscow final, I need to rest it for upcoming tournaments." Grande defeated her doubles partner Fusai 6-4 6-7 6-4 in a first round match. Germany's Marlene Weingartner was another seeded player in action on Monday. The sixth seed was defeated by Japan's Rika Fujiwara 6-4 6-1. Top seed Monica Seles, who won the Japan Open on Sunday, plays her first match on Tuesday.
