Injured Dokic wins in Moscow
Dokic made short work of her opponent
Jelena Dokic shrugged off an ankle sprain to beat Elena Dementieva 6-3 6-3 in the women's final of the Kremlin Cup in Moscow.
The fifth-seed from Yugoslavia sustained the injury in the first set after taking a tumble chasing a ball. But she recovered to deny eighth-seeded Dementieva from Russia her maiden title on home soil. "It may looked easy but it wasn't, this was definitely my toughest match both mentally and physically in the whole tournament," said Dokic, who pocketed $175,000 for the win. The 18-year-old fell in the fourth game, but, after getting treatment, quickly bounced back to take the first set in 35 minutes.
Dementieva, who knocked out top seed and defending champion Martina Hingis in the quarter-final, was let down by her service. The Russian was broken repeatedly throughout the match, despite having a better first service percentage, 62 to 47, than Dokic. "She was returning really well and even with my first serve I couldn't do much," said Dementieva. Sunday's result moved Dokic into the world top 10 for the first time in her career. "This year has been really good for me as I already had won two titles," said Dokic. Her other title wins this year came at the Rome Masters in May and the Princess Cup in Tokyo last month.
