Tough win for Tauziat
Maleeva called on all her experience in the third set
Maleeva called on all her experience in the third set
Nathalie Tauziat is through to the quarter-finals of the Leipzig Open after a hard fought 6-7 6-3 6-4 victory over Spain's Angeles Montolio.

The former Wimbledon finalist, who is seeded second will now meet either local favourite Anke Huber or Luxembourg's Anne Kremer.

Elsewhere, fifth seed Silvia Farina Elia saved two match points before finally seeing off wild card entrant Kveta Hrdlickova 6-3 4-6 7-6.

Elia will meet either top seed Kim Clijsters of Belgium or fellow Italian Francesca Schiavone in the quarter-finals.

Seventh seed Elena Dementieva is also through to the last eight after coming from a set down to beat fellow Russian Elena Likhovtseva 5-7 6-4 7-5.

Magdelena Maleeva booked her quarter-final place despite a second-set fight back by Russian qualifier Tatiana Panova.

After cruising through the first set, the number six seed let Panova take charge in the second before eventually winning 6-2 2-6 6-3.

"Perhaps I was less aggressive today but she played very well at times," said Maleeva.

"We had a couple of long games in the third set but I won most of the important points."

Foot injury

Former French Open champion Iva Majoli lost in straight sets to Anastasia Myskina.

Majoli, who was a wild card entrant, double faulted three times in the fifth game of the second set to help the 20-year-old Russian on her way to a 6-3 6-2 victory.

Myskina will now meet Anna Kournikova, who had a bye through to the second round.

Kournikova, seeded ninth, is playing only her second tournament since sustaining a foot injury in February.

Luxembourg's Anne Kremer beat Daja Bedanova 7-5 5-7 6-4 to set up a second-round meeting with Huber.

Qualifier Daniela Hantuchova will play third-seeded Jelena Dokic in the second round after Henrieta Nagyova retired with a back injury at 5-1 down in the first set.
