Andrew Ilie fought back after losing the first set
Australia's Andrew Ilie advanced into the second round of the Hong Kong Salem Open thanks to a three-set victory over Gouichi Motomura.
Ilie, ranked 63rd in the ATP Champions Race, eventually won 4-6 6-4 7-6 after a two-hour encounter against the Japanese wildcard. Meanwhile, Marat Safin and Andy Roddick begin their campaigns in the $510,000 (£350,000) tournament on Tuesday. Safin, who recorded his first tournament victory of the year in the President's Cup in Tashkent two weeks ago, is seeded second. The Russian faces Hong Kong wild card John Hui in his opening match.
Andy Roddick, whose last tournament win was in Washington in August, will play Brazilian Andre Sa in his first round match. Fellow American and three-time winner Michael Chang will be hoping to continue his successful run in the tournament against fellow countryman James Black. Elsewhere, top seed Juan Carlos Ferrero will play his first round match on Wednesday. The Spaniard arrives in Hong Kong on Tuesday, having played in a Davis Cup match against Uzbekistan at the weekend. Australian Mark Philippoussis also plays his first match on Wednesday against Israel's Harel Levy. Philippoussis will be returning to action after a six-month absence after undergoing surgery on his knee. |
