Capriati to face Serena
Anke Huber
Huber is retiring after next year's Australian Open
Jennifer Capriati and Serena Williams have reached Sunday's final of the Rogers AT&T Cup in Toronto.

Top seed Capriati had to work hard to defeat Germany's Anke Huber 6-3 3-6 6-3.

The American, who won the title here 10 years ago at the age of 15, is now guaranteed to be the second seed for the US Open, which begins a week on Monday.

Capriati said she was very happy with the quality of her shots against Huber, who was the 14th seed at the Canadian tournament.

"I was really making them and going for it. I wish every day I could play like that," she said.

Capriati broke three times on her way to taking the first set and then went 2-0 up in the second.

But the 26-year-old Huber began to battle back and reeled off five games in a row.

She took the second set but went 3-0 down in the third.

Again she fought back to 3-3 but some unforced errors allowed Capriati to edge ahead and she served out the match 6-3.

Seles succumbs

"I knew that I had the chance to beat her and I just made some unforced errors which were not necessary," said Huber, who plans to retire after the Australian Open in January.

Williams, meanwhile, avenged a quarter-final defeat to Seles in Los Angeles, prevailing 7-5 7-6.

And afterwards, she paid tribute to her battling opponent: "It was a tough match, an incredible match."

Seles was playing her fourth semi-final since returning to the tour last month in Stanford, but remains without a title in that span.

She lost to Lindsay Davenport in the final in Los Angeles, and to the other Williams sister, Venus, in the final in San Diego.
