Schalken halts Agassi charge
Roddick also beat Chang at this year's French Open
Sjeng Schalken has pulled off a big upset at the Legg Mason Classic in Washington by beating top seed Andre Agassi.
The 10th-seeded Dutchman bounced back from a slow start in their semi-final to beat the American for the first time in his career. His final opponent will be Andy Roddick, who defeated Michael Chang in Saturday's other semi-final.
Agassi won the first set comfortably enough, but was rocked on to the back foot by a sequence of Schalken winners in the second. The Dutchman lost only two points on his serve during the set and broke Agassi's serve on his second set-point. Feeling the strain after a close three-setter against Greg Rusedski in the previous round, Agassi began to tire and was unable to fend off his increasingly confident opponent. Earlier, teenager Roddick, had seen off compatriot Chang 6-4 6-3. He took control of the match quickly, breaking Chang's serve to take a 2-0 lead. Chang broke back in the next game but was broken when serving at 4-5, allowing Roddick to clinch the first set. The second set almost mirrored the first with the ninth seed Roddick breaking in the second game. Chang content But this time, the 18-year-old held onto his advantage and took the set 6-3 to secure his place in the final. "Last year, I went out there and I just didn't want to get embarrassed but this year I'm going in to win the match." The 29-year-old Chang was competing in his first semi-final of the year so was pleased with his week's work. "I came up a little short in the semi-final but overall it's been a good week for me and a great confidence booster," he said.
