Double delight for Seles
Twice is nice: Seles takes two scalps in one day
Monica Seles beat Jelena Dokic and then Justine Henin on Thursday to advance to the semi-finals of the Canadian Open in Toronto.
The American fifth seed was forced to play two matches in one day because of rain delays on Wednesday, and had to dig deep against second-seeded Henin. The Belgian, a runner-up in this year's Wimbledon singles, took the first set 6-1, before succumbing 6-2 6-2 in the next two. "The way the match started I thought it was going to be over in all of 30 minutes," said Seles, a four-time Canadian Open winner. Earlier she had defeated 10th-seeded Yugoslav Dokic 6-3 7-6 in a third-round match. Huber advances In other quarter-final action on Friday, Germany's Anke Huber outlasted qualifier in Jennifer Hopkins 7-6 6-3. Huber's victory halted the surprising run of the 20-year-old American, who was also playing her second match of the day, having just ousted seventh seed Amanda Coetzer 6-4 6-3. "It's never easy to play twice in a day," said Huber on behalf of her vanquished opponent. Top seed Jennifer Capriati and US compatriot Serena Williams also progressed after comfortable wins over Meghann Shaughnessy and Sandrine Testud. |
