Seles sees off Hingis
![]() Monica Seles kept up her good form in San Diego
Monica Seles has advanced into the final of the WTA Acura Classic in San Diego with a confident 6-3 6-4 victory over Martina Hingis.
The seventh seed will play Venus Williams, who beat Lindsay Davenport 6-2 7-5 in a repeat of their Wimbledon semi-final. "She's beaten me so many times in the past and so many times in close matches that it feels really good to win one," said Seles after beating Hingis for the first time in more than three years. "I'm just trying to enjoy myself and gain some confidence." Seles was the subject of controversy in her last eight match against fellow American Capriati, who claimed Seles' grunts were interfering with her game.
But Seles dismissed the complaints made by her former doubles partner. Williams, seeded second, got off to a fast start, taking advantage of Davenport's erratic serve. Williams' game dropped off considerably in the second, giving Davenport hope of a three-setter. Davenport erased two match points, but Williams, eager to move into her second consecutive San Diego final, finally closed out the match on the third match point with a solid backhand cross-court shot. "I think my technique dropped toward the end," Williams said. "I took my eye off the ball and my feet moved less."
