Clijsters crashes out
![]() Clijsters was satisfied with her form
Kim Clijsters was brought back down to earth with a bump three days after winning the Bank of the West Classic.
The Belgian fifth seed was beaten 6-3 6-3 to Japan's Ai Sugiyama in round two of the Acura Classic in California. "I'm disappointed that I lost but I'm pretty happy the way I played. I didn't play bad. She returns really well and likes to attack," said Clijsters. Number 13 seed Arantxa Sanchez Vicario of Spain also went out, losing 6-1 6-4 to Czech teenager Daja Bedanova. Defending champion Venus Williams routed Russian teen Elena Bovina 6-1 6-2 while fourth seed Lindsay Davenport opened with a 6-3 6-3 victory over fellow American Sandra Cacic. Jennifer Capriati also wasted little time reaching the third round with 6-1 6-1 victory over Japan's Shinobu Asagoe.
