Vavrinec gave the home crowd plenty to shout about

Local favourite Miroslava Vavrinec upset eighth seed Ana Isabel Medina-Garigues in the opening round of the PreCon Open in Basle, Switzerland.

Vavrinec, ranked 90th in the world, had to come from behind to beat her Spanish opponent 2-6 7-6 (2) 6-4.

Other first-round winners were fourth seed Francesca Schiavone, who defeated Switzerland's Emmanuelle Gagliardi 5-7 7-5 7-5, and Belarusian Tatiana Poutchek, who beat Spaniard Nuria Llagostera 7-5 6-4.

Top seed Silvia Farina of Italy will open her campaign against Switzerland's Marie-Gaiane Mikaelian on Tuesday.
