Rusedski falls in Montreal
Rusedski was undone by some poor serving
C Moya (Sp) bt G Rusedski (GB) 6-3 4-6 6-4
Former Canadian Greg Rusedski made his first appearance in Montreal for six years but was unable to overcome Carlos Moya in the opening round of the ATP Masters. The British number two had received a hostile reception the last time he visited the city following his decision to switch nationalities. But, in front of such a sparse crowd, there was little chance of a repeat performance this time round
The opening four games were a tentative affair but then Moya stepped up the pace to wrap up the first set 6-3. Rusedski bounced back in emphatic style, his passing shots proving too good for his Spanish opponent. The big-serving Brit had chances to win the decider after levelling the match at one-set all. But Moya began to find the winners he had served up regularly in the first set and profited from Rusedski's wayward serve. The Spaniard eventually booked his place in round two by claiming the final set 6-4. "It was a good win for me because I have never beaten him before on a fast surface and this is a really fast surface," said Moya. "I think I had some good returns and that puts some pressure on when you serve and you see your opponent is returning pretty well.
