Kafelnikov edges past Finn
![]() Kafelnikov received an unexpected scare
Top seed Yevgeny Kafelnikov of Russia had to battle for his 6-2 4-6 6-2 victory over Finland's Tuomas Ketola in the first round of the
Halle ATP tournament.
Germany's Tommy Haas, seeded eighth, canterede to a 6-4 6-4 win over Max Mirnyi of Belarus. Defending champion David Prinosil edged past Spain's Carlos Moya after winning the first two sets in two tense tie-breakers. Prinosil meets Roger Federer of Switzerland in the second round after Federer, seeded sixth, came back from one set down to beat Spain's Albert Portas 6-7 (4-7) 6-4 6-2. "The pressure is always very high as defending champion. So I'm delighted that I've gotten over the early hurdle," said Prinosil. Sweden's Magnus Larsson overcame Spain's Alex Calatrava 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 and seventh seed Thomas Johansson beat Michael Chang of the United States 6-2 7-5. Fellow Swede Jonas Bjorkman thrashed Netherlands' Sjeng Schalken 6-1 6-4. |
