Qualifier Canas wins in Casablanca
![]() Guillermo Canas did not drop a set all week
Argentine qualifier Guillermo Canas won his first major title at the Casablanca ATP tennis tournament with a straight sets win over Spaniard Tommy Robredo.
Canas, ranked 40th in the world, was a surprise winner at the Grand Prix Hassan II when he saw off the Spanish teenager 7-5, 6-2. The 23-year-old said that he had found new moral strength while playing in Morocco where he did not drop a single set in seven matches. "I lost matches psychologically before," said the Argentine of his past failure to win titles. Marathon semi-final "I wasn't prepared enough despite having the same level of play as the others. "This week I just played unbelieveable. Everything was working. Today I had a lot of chances and this gave me a lot of confidence to win my first title," he added. Both players played from the back of the court and this worked to Canas' advantage. He kept up the pressure on 19-year-old Robredo, who looked to be feeling the after effects of his marathon three set semi-final tie against Moroccan Younes El Ayanoui and had some difficulty reaching the shots. The Spaniard lost his service in the fifth game of the second set and with it all hope of coming back into the match.
