J C Ferrero (Spa) beat F Mantilla (Spa) 7-6 4-6 6-3

Top-seeded Juan Carlos Ferrero finally beat Felix Mantilla in three sets on Sunday to win the £435,000 Estoril Open and clinch his second ATP title of the year.

The two Spaniards matched each other in strength and spirit over more than three hours of grinding clay court tennis.

Ferrero, 20, won the Dubai Open last month and was ranked 19th coming into the tournament.

Meanwhile, Mantilla appears to be back to form after undergoing shoulder surgery.

The 26-year-old clay court specialist came through the qualifying rounds at Estoril, knocking out No. 2 seed Tim Henman in the second round.

In the women's final, Spain's Angeles Montolio came back in the second set to beat Russia's Elena Bovina 3-6 6-3 6-2 and win her first WTA title since going professional in 1990.

"I was very tired at the beginning, but I managed to turn the match around in the first two games of the second set," said Montolio.

"I'm very happy to have won my first title on the Tour. All the efforts and sacrifices have finally paid off."

Bovina said: "I'm diasppointed because I didn't play my game. I knew her strategy and type of play and I knew I had to come up to the net. But for some reason, I stayed at the back.

"I reached my first final on the Tour though, and I'm happy for that."
