Last eight takes shape in Estoril
Slovak Dominik Hrbaty won in straight sets
Hrbaty beat Dutchman Jan Siemerink in straight sets
Slovak Dominik Hrbaty and Romania's Andrei Pavel eased past non-seeded opponents in straight sets at the Estoril Open to qualify for the quarter-finals.

Third seed Hrbaty beat Dutchman Jan Siemerink 6-1, 6-3 and will now face Spaniard Albert Portas, who put an end to Argentine Guillermo Coria's tournament hopes.

"It will be my real test of the week," said the man known as "the Dominator".

His victims over the past two seasons have included world Brazil's Number one Gustavo Kuerten, American Pete Sampras and Russian Yevgeny Kafelnikov.

Argentinian Franco Squillari dropped a set on his way to victory against Albert Martin
Squillari: Dropped a set

"I'm playing pretty well in my first clay tournament of the season, but I'll soon find out how high my level is."

"I think things are going better than I expected. But against Portas, I will be able to see what form I'm in for this type of surface," Hrbaty said.

Portas took more than two hours to claim victory against Coria, who had knocked out seventh seed Nicolas Lapentti of Ecuador in the opening round.

Fifth seed Pavel won his place in the quarter-finals by beating Spain's David Sanchez 6-4, 6-1.

In other second-round singles play on Thursday, Argentina's Franco Squillari, seeded fourth, dropped a set on his way to victory over Spain's Alberto Martin 6-3, 2-6, 6-3.

Top seed Juan Carlos Ferrero will face unseeded fellow Spaniard Albert Montanes on Friday.

In the concurrent women's draw, now devoid of the top two seeds after early defeats for holder Anke Huber of Germany and number two Magdalena Maleeva of Bulgaria, unseeded Rita Grande advanced.

The Italian beat Denisa Chladkova of the Czech Republic 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) to move into a last eight confrontation with Spain's Angeles Montolio.

Slovenian Tina Pisnik rallied from 2-5 down in the first set to post a 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 second-round win over Austrian fourth seed Barbara Schett.
