Seles out as Hingis and Davenport cruise
Martina Hingis
Martina Hingis had few problems winning her match
Martina Hingis, Lindsay Davenport and Venus Williams all emerged victorious from their second round matches at the Tennis Masters Series.

But while the top three seeds progressed, there were upsets for Monica Seles and Conchita Martinez.

Fourth seed Seles suffered a shock 7-6 (8/6) 3-6 6-4 defeat at the hands of Italy's world No.54 Tathiana Garbin.

And Martinez, who was seeded five, fell victim to even more of an outsider, with Russian newcomer Elena Bovina, who is ranked 141, romping to a 6-4 6-4 win.

Because the top 32 competitors received first-round byes, the likes of Hingis and Davenport played their first matches after two days of competition had been completed.

Hingis, the world number one and the 1998 Indian Wells champion was tested for the first set against Czech Kveta Hrdlickova but turned it on in the second set to run out a 7-5 6-0 winner.

You play all of the top players all of the time, you're going to win some and lose some
  Lindsay Davenport

Second seed and reigning champion Davenport overwhelmed Australian Nicole Pratt 6-2 6-1

The Californian won her second title of the season a week ago in Arizona, extracting revenge over Jennifer Capriati for an Australian Open semi-final defeat.

"You play all of the top players all of the time, you're going to win some and lose some," said Davenport.

Third seed Venus Williams ran off 11 games before Frenchwoman Sarah Pitkowski won her first and only, getting applause from the sympathetic crowd on the way to a 6-0 6-1 defeat.

Number 13 Sandrine Testud of France defeated Spain's Angeles Montolio 6-1, 6-3, while Belgium's 14th-seeded teenager Kim Clijsters advanced over Silvia Plischke of Austria 6-2, 6-3.
