Huber cruises through
Anke Huber
Huber did not let Jeyaseelan's tantrums put her off
German Anke Huber, the only seed in action on the opening day of the Paris Open, enjoyed a 6-1 6-3 win over Canadian Sonya Jeyaseelan.

The number six seed produced an impressive display of power tennis and never looked in trouble against an opponent ranked 46 places below her.

Jeyaseelan had a frustrating match, often questioning line calls and decisions, but Huber did not get distracted as she booked her place in the last 16.

Her next opponent will be Romanian Roxanda Dragomir, who cruised to a 6-2 6-1 win over Kveta Hrdlickova of the Czech Republic in a one-sided encounter.

The closest match was the baseline battle between Luxembourg's Anne Kremer and German qualifier Andrea Glass, which Kremer won 4-6 6-4 6-1.

Glass took the early advantage, racing into a 4-1 lead in the first set.

Kremer, the world number 35, fought back to 4-4 but crucially lost her serve in the next game, leaving Glass to close out the set.

Kremer then took control, winning the last two sets 6-4 6-1 to set up a second-round clash against local favourite Mary Pierce.

Sandrine Testud
Testud never recovered after a poor start
France's Sandrine Testud became the first seed to fall when she was beaten 7-6 4-6 6-3 by American Meghann Shaughnessy.

The fifth seed started badly, losing her first service game as she struggled to find her rhythm, but she broke back in the ninth game and forced a tiebreak.

Yet some fine baseline play, particularly on the forehand, ensured the American got the mini-breaks when they mattered, winning 7-4.

In the second set Testud saved two break points at 4-4 and then clinched the set with a break of her own.

Shaughnessy capitalised on some unforced errors to break Testud's serve in the fifth game of the deciding set and the consistency of her groundstrokes paid dividends.

Shaughnessy served to love to go 5-3 up and Testud was unable to defend her serve in the next game, losing in two hours 15 minutes.

The American will face Denisa Chladkova in the next round after the Czech's straight-sets win over Spanish qualifier Ana Isabel Medina Garrigues.
