Coetzer suffers shock defeat
Amanda Coetzer
Amanda Coetzer made far too many errors
Japan's Shinobu Asagoe notched up the biggest win of her career when she beat South African Amanda Coetzer at the Pan Pacific Open on Thursday.

Her defeat was one of several shocks in the second round, with another Japanese player, Ai Sugiyama, defeating French fifth seed Sandrine Testud and America's Lisa Raymond crashing out to Croatia's Iva Majoli.

Fourth seed Coetzer played dreadfully against the 77th-ranked Asagoe, making numerous mistakes which made her 6-4 5-7 7-6 defeat less of a surprise by the conclusion of the contest.

"Once Coetzer got the lead in the second set, it didn't faze me," Asagoe said.

I just made a lot of errors when I was ahead and looking to close out the match

"When the chances came, and they were few, I never missed those chances."

In the third set tie-breaker, world number 10 Coetzer had four unforced errors and was run ragged along the baseline by Asagoe.

Majoli power

Her win also marked the first time in about a year that a Japanese player has defeated a top 10 player.

Testud's defeat was even more straightforward, as she trailed throughout her match before succumbing 6-4 6-4.

Seventh seed Raymond was slightly unluckier, with Majoli's power eventually proving to be too much as went down 6-7 6-2 7-6.

Second seed Lindsay Davenport, however, stormed into the quarter-finals, fellow American Meghann Shaughnessy 6-3 6-2.

Davenport rode out an early break to take the first set and then proved too powerful for Shaughnessy, winning in less than an hour.
