Haas and Clement fall
Lleyton Hewitt
Lleyton Hewitt only needed an hour on court to progress
Arnaud Clement and Tommy Haas made early exits at the Adidas International in Sydney.

But the remaining big names all made light of their opponents as they progressed to the quarter-finals.

Defending champion Lleyton Hewitt, who cruised through 6-4, 6-1 against fellow Australian Andrew Ilie, was particularly pleased with his performance.

Ahead of the Australian Open, the number two seed said: "I felt very good and I'm just getting that match fitness back.

Tommy Haas
Haas was left frustrated by his defeat
"I played some good tennis in the second set, probably the best tennis I'd done in the last week and a half."

Hewitt, who dropped only 10 points in the second set, will now face Fabrice Santoro. The Frenchman beat Italian Gianluca Pozzi 7-5, 7-5.

Top seed Magnus Norman also won through to the last eight in straight sets.

Haas upset

The Swede beat Australia's Todd Woodbridge 6-3, 6-1 to set up a tie with Switzerland's George Bastl who ousted Clement.

The number five seed fell away against the Swiss qualifier to lose 5-7, 6-2, 6-2.

He was not the only high profile casualty of the day though. After winning the AAPT Championship in Adelaide last week Haas was among the favourites in the tournament.

However, the number seven seed was undone in straight-sets in an all-German affair with Rainer Schuettler, despite being 4-0 up in the second set.

Elsewhere, in another national head-to-head, Roger Federer completed an easy 6-1, 6-2 win over Marc Rosset in only 45 minutes.

It was the first time in three meetings that the 19-year-old had beaten his Swiss compatriot.

The Hopman Cup winner will now meet the number six seed Sebastien Grosjean after the Frenchman beat Belgium's Christophe Roche 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Also through to the last eight is Sweden's Jonas Bjorkman. He ended the hopes of local favourite Jason Stoltenberg 6-4 3-6 7-6.
