Kafelnikov reaches Qatar last eight
Yevgeny Kafelnikov
Yevgeny Kafelnikov survived a second set scare
Top seed Yevgeny Kafelnikov battled his way into the quarter-finals of the Qatar Open on Thursday, but fifth seed Marc Rossett became the latest big name casualty.

Kafelnikov, Germany's Nicolas Kiefer and Hicham Arazi of Morocco are the only seeds to have made it through to the final eight.

But Kafelnikov was made to work hard by Swedish qualifier Fredrik Jonsson as he recorded a 6-3 7-6 victory in one hour and 34 minutes.

"It was a tough match and the second set could have gone either way," said Kafelnikov, who took the tie-break 7-3.

Service problems

Switzerland's Rosset was knocked out 6-2 6-3 in little over an hour by Czech qualifier Bohdan Ulihrach.

It was a tale of two serves as the former Olympic champion struggled with his, while Ulihrach had a 75% success rate on his first serve.

Second seed Nicolas Kiefer progressed with a 6-0 7-6 win over Spain's Alex Calatrava.

The Spaniard broke Kiefer in the second game of the second set but the German responded and duly took the tie-break 7-2.

Wimbledon semi-finalist Vladimir Voltchkov beat Belarus compatriot and training partner Max Mirnyi 4-6 6-3 7-5 in Thursday's other second round match.

The quarter-finals see Kafelnikov pitted against Ulihrach, Kiefer takes on Voltchkov, Marcelo Rios of Chile faces Fernando Vicente of Spain and Arazi plays Frenchman Nicolas Escude.
