Hewitt moves into second round
![]() Top seed Lleyton Hewitt was in excellent form
Lleyton Hewitt started the defence of his Australian men's hardcourt championship title with a comfortable 6-4 6-3 victory over fellow Australian Wayne Arthurs in Adelaide.
In front of his home crowd, the world number seven took five break points during the first set and broke early in the second to move easily into the second round. Sweden's Thomas Johansson also cruised into the next stage with a straight sets win over Spaniard Felix Mantilla. Despite playing in soaring temperatures and gusting winds more likely to suit his Spanish opponent, the seventh-seeded Johansson breezed through the match to win 7-6 6-2.
"Felix was playing really well in the beginning, his strokes are very heavy in these conditions, but then I started to serve a lot better." Third seed Arnaud Clement also progressed into the next round after a comprehensive 6-0 6-3 over Italian Andrew Gaudenzi. Germany's Bjorn Phau had an easy 7-5 6-1 win over home favourite Todd Woodbridge to reach the second round. |
