Steve Davis on the LG Cup
Six-time world champion Steve Davis was the man to ask about the LG Cup having witnessed most of the action in Preston.
"The Nugget" can still mix it with the best, as his first round win over Northern Ireland's Patrick Wallace displayed. But Steve fell in the second round to the tournament's eventual winner Stephen Lee, who defeated arch rival Peter Ebdon 9-4 in Sunday's final. Forming part of the BBC's commentary team, Steve was perfectly poised to answer your questions.
A selection of your e-mails appear below James, Plymouth Who do you think is the most naturally talented player in the history of snooker? James, Plymouth SD:I think it has got to be Ronnie O'Sullivan. Not just because he can play left handed but because of the way he can play right handed. He really is poetry in motion. Even though we have had some great talents in the past like Jimmy White and Alex Higgins, I really do feel that Ronnie is a class above those in the gifted department. Jimmy White certainly is exciting and Alex Higgins was certainly charismatic, but for me it's Ronnie. Although back in the 1920's there was an Australian player called Walter Lindrum who was said to be the most naturally gifted¿although that's a bit too long ago for me!
Will Hunns, Yeovil Now that Stephen Lee has won the LG cup, do you feel he has the ability to go and win the world championships? SD:Stephen Lee, Ronnie O'Sullivan and John Higgins were all juniors at roughly the same time. As far as I know from talking to Stephen's father, Stephen had the better of them on many occasions. So it was funny when they turned professional that it was the other two who started to make their mark. Maybe he's a late developer. He's always had a great cue action and if he's in the form he showed last week then yes he could win the world championships. It takes a little bit more to win that than to win the LG cup, but if he has a good season and grows in confidence there's no reason why he couldn't do it?
Ronald Lagarde, Holland Why are all the best snooker players from England? SD:I think there are two reasons. We have the roots of the game here and we have generations of players who have fed from each other. Also the tournament season and most of the competitions are in this country, so it's a lot harder for someone to come from another country to make their name here. In the past there have only been a couple of overseas players to win the world championships. Players from Australia and Canada and Thailand, who have produced some good players, haven't really settled here. And to be honest I don't think I would like to have travel and have to settle somewhere for seven or eight months of a year, a long way from home and then still play good snooker.
Nicky, Colchester Is snooker about skill or does luck usually decide the winner? SD:The skills levels of the players have risen as the competitive side of the game has increased. So we have a situation where the best of nine games is even more down to luck than it ever seemed to be. One lucky shot could turn a game and the other could never recover from it. Really that's down to the fact that the skills levels are so high. Back in the 1970's a snooker player would need four chances to win a frame but these days it has gone down to just two chances. So many more games are won with large breaks than before.
