What is your favourite World Series memory?

The 2000 World Series between New York rivals the Mets and the Yankees promises to go down as one of the great baseball match-ups. But what is your favourite World Series moment?

HAVE YOUR SAY

Maybe it's Carlton Fisk's blast off the foul pole or Reggie Jackson's three homers in one game. Perhaps the Mets's error-assisted comeback in 1986 held you enraptured. Or the Yankees' return to glory has you mesmerised.

Perhaps you saw a game from a front row seat, or in a place you'll never forget.

Tell us your best World Series memory.

Perhaps another thing Doug from England doesn't understand is that the BBC website is a truly global one providing coverage of world events with importance to many people from many places. Perhaps you do need to grow up there to appreciate it. Perhaps Doug prefers the very English sport of Sheep Dog Trials.
Utah Bennette, UK (ex US)

Maybe Doug from England does not realize that over 25 percent of the players in the Major Leagues are foreign born players. It truly is a world league with representatives from almost country in the Western Hemisphere and players hailing from Asia and Australia. As far as World Series memories go, Bill Buckner you broke my heart. The curse of the Bambino still haunts the Red Sox.
Robert Reel, USA

In October of 1978, the NY Yankees played the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series. I was fortunate enough to attend game 5 of that World Series in NY with my father. The Yankees and Dodgers were deadlocked in the series at 2 games apiece.

The Yankees scored a decisive victory that night, winning by a score of 12 to 2. That game set the stage for the Yankees to win game 6 and the Championship in LA two nights later. I was 10 years old and will never forget that night.
Gene Osso, Chester, NJ USA

My favorite World Series memory has to be Game 6 of the 1977 World Series at Yankee Stadium in New York when the Yankees¿ Reggie Jackson hit three home runs off of three different pitchers from the Los Angeles Dodgers to aid the Yankees in taking their first World Series championship since 1962 and the first in my lifetime. Jackson¿s home runs in that game were the most awesome display of power that I¿ve ever seen in a baseball game.
John Curley, USA

There are so many! But baseball isn't really a game of instant gratification, but more like that of a long distance run.

Sandy Koufax pitching on two days rest to defeat the Minnesota Twins in 1966 for the Dodgers
  Edward, USA

For myself, it is Sandy Koufax pitching on two days rest to defeat the Minnesota Twins in 1966 for the Dodgers. Or Bob Gibson striking out 17 Detroit Tigers in Game 1 of the 1968 World Series, only for the Gibson's Cardinals to lose in seven games.

But the single most dramtic moment has to be when the injury hobbled Kirk Gibson waddled to the plate, fouled off a number of pitches before depositing a pitch into the right field stands to win Game 1 of the 1988 World Series.
Edward, USA

The two best World Series moments both involved Joe Carter. Firstly the outfield catch against the Braves which gave the Toronto Blue Jays their first World Series and then the home run against the Phillies which gave the Blue Jays back-to-back World Series.
Stephen Rutkowski, Australia

Although i'm not really a baseball fan and dont have any favourite moments here's a little trivia for all those moaning about the "World Series," not having other counties playing. Originally it was called the World Series because it was sponsored by the now defunct "World" newspaper. The name just stuck.
David, Hong Kong

Who cares? For it to be a "World Series" why aren't other countries and teams involved like Cuba or Japan? Just like American rules "football," I guess you must grow up with the sport to be interested.
Doug, England

My dream came true when the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Americans, not once but twice. Someday the "World Series", might actually have teams from many other countries. When that happens, I'll look forward when the Americans lose even more.

I can't recall which game it was of the 1972 series between the Reds and the A's, but Johhy Bench was at the plate, and A's manager Dick Williams goes to the mound with the count 2 and 2 or something, and signals to intentionally walk the batter. Tennace the catcher goes way out side for ball three, and then, instead of ball four outside, the pitch goes over the plate for strike three !!! Intense.
Gordon Snedecor, USA

I agree with Luke Taylor: Minnesota's 1991 win over the Atlanta Braves. From a purely aesthetic viewpoint, the '91 Series was awesome, with five of the seven games decided by one run, four won by the home team in its last at-bat, and three decided in extra innings including Twins victories in both Games 6 and 7. But as a Twins fan, I have more selfish reasons to choose this one.

And I'll always remember how Kirby Puckett cemented his place as Minnesota's greatest sports hero in Game 6 with his catch against the left-center field fence and his 11th-inning game-winning home run. My only regret: my future wife actually attended that game in the Metrodome; I "reluctantly" settled for a celebration in front of the TV...
Brent Hartzell, USA (Florida)

My greatest World Series moment was when Jim Leyritz hit a game winning three run homerun off Mark Wohlers in the 1996 World Series
Nathan Taraska, United States

My best memory was when an injured Kirk Gibson nailed a two-run homer to help the Los Angeles Dodgers win Game 1 in the '88 series against the Oakland Athletics. Just like most reporters said at the time, it was like a Hollywood story played out in real time.
Mark Gallaway, USA

1977 world series, Yankees vs Dodgers. Reggie Jackson hits three home runs in one game, it drove the "Yankee haters" crazy.
Carol, USA

The 1991 World Series, when the Minnesota Twins defeated the Atlanta Braves. I was living in St. Paul, Minnesota, at the time, and some friends and I were watching the final game on television.

The 1991 World Series, when the Minnesota Twins defeated the Atlanta Braves

When the game ended and the Twins had won, we went outside and it seemed like one huge, ongoing, collective cheer was rising from the city into the night sky.
Luke Taylor, USA

That's easy. Game 6 of the 86 World Series. Bill Buckner's error in the 10th......
Will Maresca, USA

The best game was the battle between NY Mets and against their nemesis Altanta Braves racing for the 1999 National League championship pennant.
Carol Ann, United States

Well, as a life long NY Met fan, my favourite World Series moment- and I'm sure many other will share this one- is Game 6 of the 1986 Series with the Red Sox when the Mets, just a strike away from losing the whole the whole thing, came back and won the game.

When that seemingly harmless ground ball that rolled through Bill Buckner's legs is a moment I remember jumping up and down, screaming. It is a moment never to be forgotten. Now- Let's Go Mets 2000!!
Chet Cutick, New York City, USA
