Who will make it into Europe?
![]()
With the Championship wrapped up in March, and the final relegation place already decided, the only unresolved issue in the Premiership is European qualification.
Manchester United and Arsenal are sure of Champions League football next season, but who will join them in this elite competition? The race is still wide-open. Liverpool currently occupy third place, but failure to defeat Charlton at the Valley could result in either Leeds or Ipswich leap-froggging them to take the last spot. And it's not only Champions League places that are up for grabs. Several clubs are in with a chance of emulating Liverpool's Uefa Cup adventure. Chelsea and Sunderland both have the opportunity to bring European football to their fans, but who do you think will make it? Will Liverpool's exertions on their three cup runs prove to be their undoing at the end of the season? Can Chelsea's cosmopolitan team redeem their inconsistent season by ensuring European football for Claudio Ranieri? Are Sunderland strong enough to survive in Europe? And what about the Inter-toto Cup? Is it a worthwhile competition, or an excuse for an extra summer holiday? Who do you think will make the cut? Let us know what you think.
Chelsea to qualify and win the Uefa Cup next year, beating Leeds on the way with Liverpool going into the Champions League.
Leeds have the depth and quality of squad, in addition to the experience required for European football. Ipswich have neither. If Ipswich go through they will be outclassed because they have none of the above and as everyone over here knows - your Premiership league is too big and you have too much football. Ipswich will exit early on and once again English football will be perceived by many Europeans as weak.
That said I salute Ipswich for a magnificent season.
Let them consolidate this and build next year. Their time will come. Right now I think it deserves to be Leeds for the sake of the reputation of British football in Europe.
Liverpool will take third place. Forget the treble! Watch out for 'the quad' - WATCH THIS SPACE!
Darren Armstrong, UK Liverpool will probably be the third team to qualify for the Champions League although I'd like it to be Ipswich, just because they're the underdog. If Ipswich make it then most people will have to eat their own early season words with lashings of humble pie.
Liverpool to draw at Charlton, Ipswich and Leeds to win. Leeds finish third, Ipswich fourth on goal difference and Liverpool fifth. Chelsea to choke in the final game and Sunderland to win to jump above and claim the last Uefa spot. Well, just a guess!
I think Liverpool will falter at Charlton and Leeds will go on to qualify for the Champions League .. the 6-1 win over Brdadford certainly helped their goal difference!
Stuart Woodward, UK
I can see Liverpool failing to get the win they need against Charlton to ensure the third Champions League spot. Charlton have an excellent home record and are more than a match for Liverpool. Personally, I would rather see Leeds in the Champions League next season, because I cannot envisage Liverpool's luck lasting for a nine month long competition. A win for Charlton in the final weekend would bring an over-hyped, one-dimensional team back down to earth again.
I think Chelsea will get into next season's UEFA Cup and they will win. Also Liverpool will join Man Utd and Arsenal in the Champions League and they can win the trophy.
Jake, UK
Is Chris nuts or what? With Man Utd having signed Van Nistelrooy, they will win the Champions League. Liverpool will only get to the qualifying stages, and get knocked out.
I think Liverpool will go though and win the Champions League next year.
