Holmes was the favourite to win the BBC award
Double Olympic gold medallist Kelly Holmes has won the 2004 Sports Personality of the Year award.
The honour caps a wonderful year for the 34-year-old runner, who won the 800m and 1500m in Athens in August.
Earlier, terminally-ill child Kirsty Howard was honoured with the Helen Rollason Award, after showing incredible courage and determination to raise money for other children.
Great Britain's Olympic men's coxless four collected the Team of the Year award for their astounding success in Athens, and Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was named Coach of the Year.
Other award winners were Abdullah Ben-Kmayal, Unsung Hero of the Year, Overseas Personality of the Year Roger Federer and Young Sports Personality of the Year Andrew Murray.
Cricket legend Ian Botham completed the line-up of winners, collecting a lifetime achievement award.
Here's a selection of your congratulatory messages.

Congratulation to Kelly Holmes, who was my favourite to win the Award. I was surprised as to the tem of the year and coach of the year though. Personally I believe the cricket team should have got more recognition after the season they have just had.

I am absolutely delighted for Andrew Murray. The Young SP Award was well deserved for him. Also congratulations to the ever amazing British Coxless Four Team. I cried my eyes out with Matthew's speech at the beginning. To all the other athletes, especially Kelly Holmes, congratulations. To those who didn't win, the effort to be a great in sport will always remain in you. Again, congratulations, and here's to an excellent 2005 of sport. Thank you BBC for all your wonderful coverage. As parting words, I would like to say: Go Tiger Tim!
Sincerest congratulations, Kelly: absolutely outstanding! Makes me proud to be British!

Why didn't Arsenal Football Team with Team of the year, they set a record of 49 league games unbeaten. Makes you wonder, what a Football Team has to do to win an award.

Well done Kelly you deserve it. Congratulations to all the other winners. We are proud to be British.
Jan and Mike Buckingham, Florida
A double - yes double gold medallist at 34 really is astonishing. It makes you wonder just what she could have achieved if she'd remained injury free! The obvious winner. Well done Kelly.
Well done Kelly, you truly deserve your award, Congratulations, Roy.
R Stemp, Rotterdam, Holland
I was there in Athens and it was amazing - I am so proud!!! XXX
Never a more deserving person to win. Kelly Holmes is the epitome of a true athlete. In today's celebrity dominated world seeing someone who has spent years persevering to be the best in the world is very very refreshing. A true hero and a great role model.

Sean Wright, Ilkeston, Derbyshire
Kelly you've worked so hard for your success - you deserve every accolade. You are an excellent role model with a great personality too! I have the image of you passing the finish line and winning your second gold as my computer screen saver. What a kick it is to see that incredible moment each time I switch my laptop on. Best wishes.
Monica Hayworth, London
Congratulations Kelly, well deserved. It took long time until you had an injury free season so you could show us your true potential.
Huge congratulations to Kelly who has given our country a great woman to be incredibly proud of. And another great human being to be so very proud of was Kirsty who thoroughly deserved that award and is truly one of the bravest around.
Dave Collings, Sheffield
I am concerned that Amir Khan did not win the young personality. Whilst Mr Murray is no doubt a nice man, why was such a leading young person overlooked ?
David Kennedy, Nottingham
Well done Kelly, your Olympic gold medals inspired me to run the Great North Run this year and to see you at the start was even better
When Kelly won the second gold in Athens I told friends that that had sorted the BBC sports personality of the year....congratulations Kelly...and it was nice to be proved right...all the best for the future
Myke Holmes, Carlisle
Kelly Holmes - Her dedication is an inspiration. It takes so much hard work to even get anywhere near the Olympics, never mind bringing home to gold medals.
I would like to say well done to Kirsty Howard, you show such courage well done kidda, also well done Kelly you deserve it!!
Andy, Runcorn, Cheshire
Congratulations to a deserving Kelly, and especially to my sporting hero of all time ,Mr I.T.Botham. However, the show was stolen by the amazing Kirsty Howard. You are an amazing young lady, an inspiration to all for your courage. I am proud of shedding the tears that I did, whilst watching your entrance and reception.
Andrew Dodd, Lincolnshire
Well done to everyone, especially Kelly who totally deserve it. Pity that Bradley Wiggens didn't get anything for his achievements. What else, other than winning 3 Olympic medals )including one gold) in one games, did the guy have to do to get recognised!?
Well done Kelly, sterling effort. I think you and big Freddie deserved your awards. Let's hope the England XI can now give us the Ashes this year.
George, South Africa
Well done to all the award winners this evening, especially Beefy Botham (one of my sporting heroes) and Kelly Holmes.
Kelly, well done on those two gold medals and you are a true hero and tonight put the cherry on the cake.
A special mention goes to Kirsty Howard. Kirsty, you are an inspiration to us all in everything you have done at your young age. God bless you, kid.
Richard, Barry, Vale of Glamorgan
Congratulations to Kelly...she 100% deserved this award tonight. I was there the night of the 800m final in Athens, she set the stadium maybe even more alive than when the Greeks themselves were winning! If Kelly reads this, best of luck for the future, and congratulations on being a true British sporting legend - and thanks for one of the most memorable nights of my life!
Gareth Collett, Middlesbrough
All of the awards were well deserved but the best of the night was to Kirsty Howard. That little girl has battled through so much for so long but still always has a smile on her face and is doing so much to help others.
Craig R Taylor, Glasgow
Congratulations to you Kelly, a true role model for all youngsters. Keep it up and good luck. Kindest regards.
