Best young gun?
Leeds' James Milner and Everton's Wayne Rooney
Wayne Rooney burst onto the Premiership stage when his late winner for Everton ended Arsenal's unbeaten run. But 16-year-old James Milner has scored two in two games for Leeds.

Which player will make the biggest impact on the Premiership stage?

Wayne Rooney came off the bench to score a sublime winner against Arsenal and was immediately hailed as the Premiership's new wonderboy. He followed this up with cracking goals against Blackburn and Leeds.

But this Christmas has seen the rise of a new star in the shape of James Milner who scored Leeds' winner at Sunderland and ran the show as Chelsea faltered at Elland Road.

Which one will make the biggest impact on the Premiership?

This debate has now closed, here are a selection of your comments.

There is a lot of young hope for the England team. I'm not meaning to brag here, but look at my team, Forest. They have a great team and some great players, like Dawson, Willams and Prutton. They are all good U-21 internationals and I can't wait to see them play for England!
Harry Fish, England, Leicester, Barwell

Wayne Rooney stands out head and shoulders above his peers, irrelevant of his tender age. David Moyes is doing a great job with him and I fully expect young Wayne to be playing alongside or even in lieu of fellow Liverpudlian Michael Owen for years to come.
Mr S E, Sweden

Rooney will have the biggest impact. People are already saying he should be in the England squad and I think it is not far off the truth. We have seen he has the strength, speed and finishing ability and should at least be given the chance.
Tom Agnew, Scotland

Rooney's goal against Arsenal was one of the best I've ever seen

Richard, England

Rooney is all strength- Milner is far more skilful and will be superior in the long run.
Matthew Griffiths, UK

Milner's head is screwed on tighter than Rooney's. I get the feeling that Milner will make a greater impact on the world stage in the future.
Paul, Wales

Rooney and Milner are young and talented players but I think the media's mounting pressure on them and only being teenagers, they might crack. We need to give them two more seasons and from there we'll be able to say who the better player is.
Beng Timothy Kum Stojkovic, Cameroon

Rooney's goal against Arsenal was one of the best I've ever seen - sublime control, Sol Campbell closing him down and he still manages a shot that no keeper in the world would have saved.

I'd have them both in the England squad now though.
Richard, England

Watch out for Michael Chopra of Newcastle United. He's 18-years-old, a bit older, but also someone with great potential, you mark my words.
Peter, England

Milner looks a far better bet for stardom

Ian Hillman, UK

Some of the comments on here clearly show that a lot of you have never seen Rooney play, you've obviously only seen a few highlights.

Wayne Rooney is the most complete player you will ever see, he has everything. Pace, power, vision, desire, strength, quick feet, great balance, awareness, confidence and the rest. Milner is quality, Rooney is something special. Anyway, why the competition? As Englishmen we should be celebrating these two!
Adam, UK

Both great prospects....but Everton's whole turn around is off the back of Roonaldo's emergence into the first team. If the lad can cope psychologically, he is set to become what Gazza could have been. However, clubs and agents now seemed to have learned from the experiences of previous prodigies - which should ensure Rooney receives the necessary protection and guidance.

Milner is also a good prospect; but Wayne Rooney IS Everton at the moment. It would be great to see some loyalty in the Premiership - if Rooney follows the example of Alan Shearer, he will transform Everton.
Paul, UK

James Milner looks a far better bet for stardom. His confidence is born of talent rather than bullishness.
Ian Hillman, UK

I don't even know why we are putting these two in the same category as everyone can see, especially after yesterday's performance Wayne Rooney is class beyond his years and will be class for years to come.
Scott, England

Wayne Rooney is simply the greatest prospect in world football

Craig, UK
Rooney is far better, as he has more determination whilst he's playing. Also he is fearless whilst he is heading for the goal.
Lisa, England

Thankfully for England, Rooney is a striker and Milner a winger, which makes them difficult to compare. Milner has the potential to develop into a world class player, Rooney has the potential to be on a completely different level.

Anyone who saw him against Bolton, saw a talent that could one day be ranked as one of the best ever, he is already one of the best players in the Premiership.
James, England

I think they both have been over rated by media. There is no doubt that they are good players but media will affect their performance
Ikram, England

Wayne Rooney is simply the greatest prospect in world football. Milner is also very exciting, but not in the same league as Rooney. Rooney will terrify defences with his pace, strength and desire, not to mention his ball control and shooting.

Milner has scored two goals and took them both very well. The question really lies in who would you prefer in your team, if you had the choice, even the most loyal of Leeds supporters would be hard pressed to not say Rooney.

He's the best prospect since Maradona and I firmly believe he'll go on to be the greatest British player of all time.
Craig, UK

Rooney is undoubtedly going to be a good goal scorer, but I think that James Milner is a better all-rounder. He has been playing regularly in the Leeds reserves starting line-up since the start of the season and has played for the England U-17's
Michelle, Jersey

Milner I think will be just like Joe Cole, an OK player but never the greatest

Richard, England
Both teenage stars have tremendous skill and ability, in my opinion Wayne Rooney has the most desire and puts in maximum effort where as Milner may sometimes lack potential.

All I can say is either one of these will be the striker Eriksson has been looking for to team up with Owen.
Lewis , UK - England

The facts speak for themselves:

Rooney, 3 goals in 19 league games (5 starts) Milner, 2 Goals in 5 league games (0 starts)

Both look good, but Milner's record is far better than Rooney's!
Ashley Rose, England

There is no doubt about it, Rooney is a class player! Milner is just another one of those players. He's a good player but does not have the same future as Rooney could have.

Milner I think will be just like Joe Cole, an OK player but never the greatest. I'm looking forward to seeing Rooney developing.
Richard, England

There isn't any doubt that they are both great players, but we have got to calm down about talk of them being future England players. There may be other players like them, or better, that steal the show.

I would go for Milner, just, because he has better control with the ball at his feet and he scores goals from midfield. Also he is younger (just!) than Rooney. We should wait a year or two and see how they are doing then.
Phil, Hereford, England

I think some of these comments show some of you know nothing about football, Wayne Rooney is the most exciting footballer England has seen for years.

Just because this Milner scores two goals there is absolutely no comparison between the two and Rooney is by far the better player. Do those who say otherwise really know football?
John, England

Rooney will look to create a chance for himself where as Milner will look to set up another player if the option is there

Michael, England
It may well be that Milner will go on to have more of an impact on the Premiership, simply because he seems a more solid, sensible character. However, in terms of potential, Rooney could conceivably become the next Maradona, let alone Gascoigne.

For Milner, no disrespect to the lad, he'll probably be the next Nick Barmby, or something like that. Unfortunately, I think that there is more chance of Milner achieving his potential than Rooney (hope I'm proved wrong !)
Joey B, Wales

I think that Milner is better, he's scored 2 goals in two games and he's younger than Rooney was when he scored his. Rooney is also far too violent, he has such a big body and he pushes it around to much.

And how long ago was it that Rooney scored? He scored 3 goals in about 7 matches and since then the only real time he's hit the headlines is when he got sent off on Boxing Day.
Ian, Canary Islands, Spain

Although Milner is the new bright young talent, as a biased Evertonian Rooney is the better player. He is quicker, stronger and has scored more goals so far. Time for him to step up to the full England squad.
Stewart L MacLaren, Spain

Wayne Rooney is good but I believe that James Milner is better. I went to school with Milner and what a lot of people don't realise is that he has bags of stamina, he was the West Yorkshire Cross Country champion on numerous occasions and he also has pace to burn.

Wayne Rooney will look to create a chance for himself where as Milner will look to set up another player if the option is there. A much less selfish player.
Michael, England

I thought Rooney was overrated until I watched the Bolton game. I have to say he was absolutely sensational. He reminded me of when I used to watch a young Gazza from the St James Park terraces, but this lad is better.
Chiz, Newcastle, England

I think Milner will make more of an impact, even though he won't get as much of the spotlight, because Rooney was here first and Milner came after.

The goal that Rooney scored against Arsenal says enough about who is best

Peter Hough, Dubai
Rooney's first goal wasn't magnificent - he had acres of room and he was shooting at a 40 year old keeper way past his prime. They both have a bright future ahead, but I'm going for Milner. And I don't even support Leeds.
J, Ireland

Wayne Rooney is by far the better of the two players because he is the more complete player who can play in midfield as well as up front. He has pace, power, great ball control, passing and shooting. The goal that Rooney scored against Arsenal says enough about who is best!!
Peter Hough, Dubai, UAE

James Milner , I think is the best, simply because he has suddenly infused life into the Leeds team
Ram Kumar, India

Both these kids have tremendous technical ability, can use footwork to get past opposing players and have an eye for goal.

Rooney may make the headlines more because he is a striker, and his job is to score. However, Milner is likely to be just as valuable if not more so - he is a creator, but his eye for goal means he is unlikely to stay too far away from the headlines.

The ironic thing about this whole debate is that Leeds have another youngster, 15 year old Aaron Lennon, that is better than either Milner or Rooney already!
Lew, USA

I had to reply back to the person who said Wayne Rooney was arrogant and full of cockiness. I have met the lad at the players Christmas lunch and I could not fault him.

He is polite, shy and does not have an arrogant side to him at all. Milner and Rooney are both great prospects for England. That goal Milner scored was a beauty and this is coming from an Everton fan
Mike Carter, Moysie'side

I just saw the highlights, Wayne Rooney is unbelievable. It was amazing, the way he ran at the defence, the ball control, the strength, its frightening to think what this kid can achieve.

He is without doubt the best English talent since Gazza. He reminds me of the young Ronaldo who frightened defences around Europe in the mid 90s playing for PSV and Barcelona. This boy will become a legend, trust me!
Amjad Khan, England

I think we are being a little too fast with judging the two players. No doubt they have plenty of talent. However Milner has only just got into the side and Rooney has been around only a few months.

I remember the likes of Julian Joachim, Jody Morris, Jamie Redknapp, Micheal Duberry, David Hillier were all seen as England greats yet they never reached their true or hyped form. The two lads need a few seasons in them before we can truly judge. Keep the pressure off the lads and just enjoy
Marky B, England

Maybe the Leeds boy can take some of the pressure off Rooney, being a lifelong Evertonian my view is obviously biased, but at least Rooney and Milner know where their hearts lie unlike some other young Everton protegy who now warms the Arsenal bench.
Sally, England

I saw Milner play today at Elland Road and he was very very impressive. He is full of confidence and on the pitch is very strong. He was holding off Desailly with ease and his goal was top class. I don't understand all this praise Rooney's been given. One goal against Arsenal when he was given a lot of space to shoot, and at a dodgy England goalkeeper. Milner is the future, not Rooney. And I'm not even a Leeds fan!
Max, England

Rooney is the more complete player, pace, strength and skill!!! englands next number 9
Bill H, England

Wayne Rooney is good but Milner is better he is a great attacking midfielder who scores lots of goals and could play for england on the left in the future but he is best on the right side of midfield
Thomas Hough, West Yorkshire

I think they're both over-rated, and I blame the media.
Deano, Wales

I personally think that Milner will eventually do better than Rooney. His head seems screwed on a bit firmer than the young Evertonian in my view. And as Rooney is being compared already to Duncan Edwards (which disgusts me), the hype will become too much eventually for Wayne.
Pete, Wales

I think Wayne Rooney is a special player that will always complicate the lives defenders with his power, pace and quickness. However, he does need to clean up his act; taunting and cockiness will ruin his image and take away from his efforts on the pitch. But he is young yet. So far I am partial to Milner because of his maturity on the ball. He seldom loses the ball and his passing is very good. Against Chelsea, he showed tremendous poise in front of goal: a nifty little move around the defender and a very confident strike on goal.
Syl, USA

At comparative ages Milner has bagged two before Rooney had got off the mark. Not bad considering Rooney is a striker & Milner a midfielder!!!!! Everton tend to grind out results & because of this will come to rely on Rooney to get them a goal, putting him under immense pressure. Milner at Leeds will be kept under the wing of a host of international players & can afford to be brought on at a slower pace. Lets hope both players go onto become succesful & regular players for both club & country alike.
Cliff, Blackpool, Lancs

England needs the likes of James Milner and Wayne Rooney. But give them time though. It is important for the media not to over hype the youngsters ability, I mean, build them into something they've not quite become. As it is a great tradition in this country for the media to over inflate someone's ability when things are going well, but as soon as things go wrong, or the player takes a fall from grace, the media is ready to pounce and kick a man when his down. Lets keep it in context. Afterall one Swallow doesn't make a summer!
john K, England

There is no doubt about it, Rooney is by far the better of the two. he has speed strength and mezmerizing dribbling.he continues to make the best of defenders look silly.
Kwaku Appiah, America

I really believe that Wayne Rooney is the best young prospect in the English Premiership at the moment. Although James Milner has scored in the last two premiership matches Rooney has already shown throughout the season that he has more all-round abilities to pass, dribble, and create and score the chances provided. I really believe that these two teenagers will be the stars of the future for the England team.
