Can NI still qualify?

Northern Ireland gained their first point of the Euro 2004 qualifying campaign thanks to Wednesday's 0-0 home draw against the Ukraine.

But what did you make of their performance?

Northern Ireland manager Sammy McIlroy said his team would be going all out for a win in the game against Ukraine at Windsor Park.

But despite a battling performance, Northern Ireland failed to hit the net again in the scoreless draw.

Give your reaction to Northern Ireland's display and where do you think Sammy McIlroy's team can go from here?

This debate is now closed. A selection of your e-mails appear below.

I was at the game on Wednesday night and thought that the commitment of all the players was fantastic. In particular, I would like to praise Damien Johnston, whose ability to beat defenders seemed to be our most likely goal threat.

On a negative note, I was disappointed with the isolation of Healy and McVeigh as there was little evidence of midfield support to their efforts. Whilst I recognize that the crowd was very vocal, it was also disappointing that players like Johnston were not always appreciated for their efforts and ability.

We can always say that we had Georgie Best

The first 10-15 minutes of the game was the best I've seen the team play in a long time. The passing and the movement was excellent. Unfortunately, the following 75 minutes or so was back to the old NI - laborious and uninventive.

I simply don't agree with Sammy when he said that if he had a prolific striker they would have won. Healy and McVeigh may not be prolific but they can get us a few goals. The problem last night wasn't anything to do with lack of fire power.

The distribution, especially the final ball, was awful. In spite of this, I think the team showed in patches last night what they are capable of.
Stephen, Northern Ireland

Great atmosphere, decent result against a superior team (ranking wise) and good potential for future success. Only need a striker now.
Ralph, N. Ireland

Brad Grant obviously knows nothing about the Northern Irish game, and sounds like he's in some sort of time warp. Lennon would never return to the set-up while he's getting death threats and (Roy) Keane is a national disgrace.

As for us being 'minnows', that's rich coming from an Aussie. How many World Cups have they been to? We may not recover for a while yet - we have much work to do from the grass roots level up - but at least we can always say that we had Georgie Best.

The standard of players and football has been deteriorating for the last thirty years
Brad Grant, Melbourne, Australia

Why should Northern Ireland merge with the Republic of Ireland to create a united Ireland? You may as well ask Scotland to merge with England becuase the Scots aren't doing well!

A good performance from the boys. Johnson and Gillespie were excellent on the wings, beating the Ukrainian full-backs almost every time.
The Albacete One, Northern Ireland

The team can't come back from the dead! The standard of players and football has been deteriorating for the last thirty years. Perhaps it is time that the underachieving Republic team is merged with their minnow neighbours to create a United Ireland.

A midfield containing Lennon and Keane would give this team the potential to be in top ten of the Fifa World Rankings.
Brad Grant, Melbourne, Australia

I thought the lads did very well, no one played badly, they were well organised and on the whole had an attacking game in mind. If we'd of had Dowie, Armstrong, Hamilton up the middle, we would have won. Altogether, I can't fault our boys, they did their best and the atmosphere at the game was really great.
Bob Brown, N. Ireland

We lacked a cutting edge upfront. But it was a good battling performance.
Jonathan Agnew, Northern Ireland
